Do you need this program in your classroom? Scheduled movement breaks for gaining attention and focus to support learning
Structured movement breaks • Brain pathways continue to develop • Prepares the brain for optimal learning • Attention and focus • Sensory regulation through movement • Brain and body communication
Will this work for me? • Brief – before or during lessons • Little space/equipment required • Performed in whole group, but benefits each individual person
What does the research say? • Stress • Adrenaline increases • Blood flows away from the brain • Breathing • Increases oxygen • Decreases heart rate • Decreases anxiety • Stretching • Relaxes muscles • Moves needed fluids to the brain • Water • Improves electrolyte balance • Enhances brain/body connections
Crossing midline • Right and Left sides of the brain • Each side controls different skills • Bilateral integration • Integrate both sides of the body simultaneously to improve communication • Learning is easier
Other midlines • Front and back • Over-focused – try too hard; frustration • Under-focused – inattentive; hyperactive • Upper and lower • Fight/flight • Emotional regulation
What can we do? • Scheduled movement breaks • Teach a couple every week or so • Prior to seated, focused tasks • During lessons • Hallway • Transitions
