  2. Cultura (Cont) Pg 33 in binder • The three main streets: • Street of Shops • Stabiae Street • Nola St. • Streets in Pompeii were arranged in a “grid” pattern. They were made from volcanic stone, and included sidewalks for pedestrians to avoid traffic and dirt/garbage lying around.

  3. Pg 33 • Bakers and Bars were found along the streets. • Other merchandise could be bought at the Forum or along the Street of Shops (The main marketplaces) • Carved/Painted signs distinguished shops from one another. • Advertisements and public notices were painted on white washed walls.

  4. Pg 33 • The Forum was located on the Western end of town. • It was a large open space with a colonade on three sides. • The forum served for: • Buying goods • Business • Public Government

  5. Pg 34 • There were 2 theaters in town: • The large theater was where the popular shows could be seen. It held ~5,000 people. • The smaller theater put on concerts. • Gladiatorial combats were seen in the Amphitheater which was on the Eastern end of town. • It could hold every resident of Pompeii…and then some!

  7. Pg 34 (Cont) • Romans maintained peace through a firm government and troops stationed in key areas. • The Romans traveled throughout the empire via the roads that connected the various towns and cities. • Many of the trade products were transported via ships.
