What’s the Big Deal • Every year college athletes are disciplined because of illegal actions involving money. Some of them receive special gifts like cars or vacations, others plainly receive cash
NCAA Rules • The NCAA forbids any college athlete to receive any type of payment for participating in a game. They are never to cross any kind of line of professionalism.
Amateur Vs. Professional • The difference between college athletes and professionals is that professional get paid. It is there ‘job’. • College athletes are amateurs, and their job while in college is to be a student first. VS.
Reasons they SHOULD be Paid • College athletics, especially D-I school and programs bring millions and millions of dollars each year. • Television networks and sports apparel companies also bank of the success of college athletes. • The only people not benefiting financially are the players.
Reason they SHOULD NOT be Paid • Student-Athletes are Students first, and paying them would contradict the reason they are in college. • If college athletes began to get paid it would turn into a job. • Putting school work in the backseat
Should Not be Paid • Paying students to play would be the downfall of the NCAA. • College sports would turn very quickly into the a professional type game that many fans try to get away from when turning on college games.
Most Important • Most student-athletes will never play at the next level, so receiving an education is vital for a successful career.
Tuition Books Room Board Team apparel Special advising Health Insurance Travel expenses All of which is top of the line, high class. Students already compensated
Problems that will arise if Paid • How much will schools be able to pay students? • Who decides what is a reasonable pay? • How would they stop/deter controversial actions by players/coaches?
In Conclusion, • Students-athletes are Students first. Their main goal should be to graduate with a degree. • Paying them will be a distraction from their school work and only hurt them in the long run.
