  4. Common Types of Figurative Language • Metaphor • The metaphor states a fact or draws a verbal pictures by the use of comparison. Example: Your eyes are stars. • Simile • A simile uses the words “like” or “as” to compare one object or idea with another to suggest they are alike. Example: You’re as graceful as a swan. • Personification • A figure of speech in which human characteristics are given to an animal or an object. Example: The sun smiled upon us. • Alliteration • The repetition of the same initial sounds in a series of words. Example: She sells seashells by the seashore.

  5. Common Types of Figurative Language • Onomatopoeia • The use of a word to describe or imitate a natural sound or the sound made by an object or an action. Example: snap, crackle, pop • Hyperbole • An exaggeration so crazy no one would believe it’s true. Example: He was so hungry he could eat a horse. • Cliché • A cliché is an expression that has been used to so often that it has become trite or overused. Example: If you make that face it’ll stick forever.

  6. Before: KWL • Write everything you know about the following topics on a sticky note: • Fishing • Salmon • Fish in general • 3 Minutes

  7. During: KWL • While we read the article, write down questions that you wonder about on the sticky note.

  8. After: KWL • On your last sticky note, write down important information that you learned today.

  9. Partner Work • Answer the questions at the end of the article about salmon. • Complete “Park It” on your own or with a partner. • Answer the questions.
