Catch a Little Rhyme By Eve Merriam Once upon a time I caught a little rhyme I set it on the floor but it ran right out the door I chased it on my bicycle but it melted to an icicle I scooped it up in my hat but it turned into a cat I caught it by the tail but it stretched into a whale I followed it in a boat but it changed into a goat When I fed it tin and paper it became a tall skyscraper Then it grew into a kite and flew far out of sight ... A A B B C C Rhyme Scheme There is a regular rhyme pattern at the end to create a beat and rhythm. The author used end rhyme so that it created a song like poem that shows emotions and feelings. Structure 8 Stanzas 16 Lines 2 Lines per stanzas Lyric Poem- Song like qualities

  3. Personification Human qualities are given to something that is not human. The “rhyme” changed into different objects and animals to show how you can change your ideas or dreams.

  4. Alliteration The repeating of the same constant sound in several words. Alliteration is used to create a rhythm and to get a point across. The poem’s speaker is anyone who is attempting to write a poem.

  5. Imagery Using figurative language to represent objects, actions, or ideas. This would help the reader understand the poem easier.

  6. Eve Merriam • In 1981, she was named the winner of the NCTE Award for Excellence in Poetry for children • Attended many colleges such as Cornell, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Columbia. • Her first book, Family Circle, was selected for the Yale series of younger poets. • Wrote, Inner City Mother Ghost, referred to be the most banned book in the country. • The authors purpose in writing this was to entertain the reader. For example, she used unusual personification to keep the readers intrigued.

  7. Literary Analysis Literal Figurative The speaker caught a little rhyme. “I caught it by the tail, but it stretched into a whale.” “Then it grew into a kite, and flew far out of sight. The Speaker thought of an idea or dream. Our imagination changes and morphs our ideas/dreams. After a while of working towards achieving your goals, it just vanishes out of our minds.

  8. Intended Theme • The intended theme is never create a dream or idea if you aren’t ready to work for it.
