Math and Science are interlocked in many ways… • Problem solving skills and patented processes • Careful observation of known factors to figure out what is happening • Understanding of physical laws that govern the universe and working with those laws • Numbers support and shape our data and dictate our lives • Even though we may not completely understand something, it does not mean there is not a profound importance!
Pedagogy…the science of teaching • Demands a philosophy of the “life long learner” • Care to stay ahead of the curve in teaching practices • Following the trends of what is working..and knowing what isn’t! • Continuous contact with parents……even if it is only informational and sometimes one way • Allowing ourselves to try new tactics and improving them to serve our student body better • Knowing that perfection is never attainable but always the ultimate goal!
Documenting and quantifying behavior… • Rating system of 1-4 • Charted over time • Not logged everyday, but several times a week in various classes • Use data to establish reward system • System described in Team Iowa info-letter
Logistics • Standard grading scale: 100-90=A, 89-80=B, 79-70=C, 69-64=D, below 64=F • BOTH Math and Science: 75% Assessments (may be in forms of tests/quizzes, labs or projects) 25% “ground work” school work to lay the foundation and learning of any given topic. • My office hours: Most days after school except for Tuesdays. Can also meet before school. • Detentions/Extra help/student or parent meetings—scheduled as needed.

Math…..how will my child be supported? • Diagnostic tools: test scores, work ethic, my observations • Pushed to top out, then pull back • Varies by the topic/day as to comfort level • Lots of choices for student to pick from in order to succeed • Use failure to make us stronger • Contact with home is crucial to the emotionality of student • It takes a village……people!
Earth Science • Geology, climatology, physics, Soil science, Hydrology and more!!! • Project based…..process of science in action important! • Learning through discovery of abiotic environment • Relate to our world, community, self
