  2. Louisiana Purchase Thomas Jefferson wanted to double the size of the USA. The only way to do that would be to buy the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon. Napoleon sold the territory for 15 million dollars, making it the biggest real estate deal in history.
  3. Who are Lewis and Clark William Clark served under Meriwether Lewis in the army. Lewis gave the position away to Clark because he had a job offer to be President Thomas Jefferson’s secretary. Lewis was a great outdoorsman and hunter. Jefferson had a job for Lewis: discover the west. Lewis chose Clarkto be his co-captain.
  4. The Goals One of the goals of the expedition was to find a waterway to the west. That was because Jefferson was interested in buying some of the west. Another goal was to see if there were any new plants and animals in the west. They did find new living species such as grizzly bears. The final goal was to trade with the Indians. They needed more supplies, so they wanted to trade.
  5. The Supplies For the expedition to be successful, the crew needed decent supplies. They took 35 oars, 6 large needles, 25 hatchets, 193 pounds of portable soup, 24 large knives, 288 brass thimbles, and more.
  6. Route of Exploration This is the route they took: They went through 12 states: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon
  7. Sacagawea Sacagawea was the only woman on the expedition. She was Toussaint Charbonneau’s wife. Toussaint Charbonneau was the crew’s fur trapper. She help with taking care of Seaman, the crew’s dog, talking to Indians, and much more. She knew the land very well. She was a great factor in making the expedition possible.
  8. Plants and Animals One of the animals Lewis and Clark found was the Grizzly Bear. They had many, many encounters with the bear. One of the surprising finds on the expedition was the white sturgeon. The crew found the sturgeon off the coast of Oregon.   9. Fort Clatsop One of the places Lewis and Clark’s troops stayed in was Fort Clatsop. Fort Clatsop was located on the Oregon Coast. Builders built the fort in 14 days, yet the corps only stayed there 24 days.
  10. The Only Death On August 20, 1803, Sergeant William Floyd died of what was probably a burst appendix. It was a big loss. He was very smart and useful. Here is his memorial in Sioux City, Iowa:
  11. The crew The honorable crew that made this possible had: 4 sergeants 5 Privates 1 woman 22 men 1 baby And a dog Lewis and Clark really found a great crew. And they should get a lot of credit, too. They carried supplies up the Rockies. They canoed against the Mississippi. They were really the ones who made this possible.
