The Sun’s Interior • The Sun produces energy through nuclear fusion • This is caused through extreme heat and pressure • The core of the Sun is about 15 million degrees Celsius
The Atmosphere • Three main layers • Photosphere • Inner layer of the Sun’s atmosphere • Makes light
Chromosphere • Middle layer of the Sun’s atmosphere • Color produced here • Corona • Outer layer of the Sun’s atmosphere • Looks like a white halo • Only visible during eclipses • Sends out electronically charged particles called the solar wind • The Earth's atmosphere absorbs these winds except near the poles where we see them as auroras
Features of the Sun • The sun rotates on an axis • Include sun spots, prominences, and solar flares
Sun spots • Small dark areas on the surface • Some spots are as large as Earth • Spots are areas of gas that are cooler then the gases around them • Hot gasses give off more light then cooler areas • The number of spots changes about every 10 years
Prominences • Reddish loops of gas that link sun spot areas • Can stick out over the edge of the Sun
Solar Flares • Loops in sunspot regions suddenly connect creating extreme heat • That heat causes hydrogen to explode out into space • Can increase the solar wind and the number of particles reaching Earth • This can create magnetic storms in Earth's upper atmosphere disrupting radio, telephone, and electrical power.
