Distance Learning in Nigeria Qualified students (reducing 800k annual shortfall) Approved group of universities – collaboration New quality DL programmes using NUC guidelines Resource led rather than ftf (max 20%) Continuous assessment and feedback DL qualified staff (50 students/tutor) Phased introduction of elearning
Train the Trainers Initiative Dec 2009 to March 2011 National Trainers Series of workshops with intervening conversations Collaborative team development of pilot modules Each phase discussed Creation of a community of National Trainers. Cascade training of university staff by National Trainers Mentoring and collaboration with OUUK
DL teaching roles National Trainers – lead development of DL in the universities – create initial courses, programmes and systems - train and mentor staff Teacher developers – provide subject specialist input to the design of programmes, courses and learning resources – tutor students - train and monitor tutors Tutors – provide academic support for students within defined course framework. STAFF QUALIFIED FOR THEIR ROLES
Schedule May 2010 - teams defined – NUC guidelines – pilot modules specified (template) – desktop AV – study guides September 2010 - Phase 2 drafts complete, i.e. full versions of main texts. In workshop - feedback on drafts. Design of support activities. Design of assessment strategy. Start planning cascade training. Lots of activity but need to catch up! Need to design DL – not just agree content
Workshop objectives At the end of the workshop, each delegate should • understand their commitment within the TtT programme, including peer mentoring. • understand the systematic processes needed to support collaborative production of distance e-learning courses. • be aware of the strategies for assessment & feedback of DL courses and be able to apply such strategies to a module • be aware of the strategies for support of DL courses and be able to apply such strategies to a module • know what is required to be a NTrainer
