Ainu • Culture developed in Japan= Ainu • Thought they came from Siberia • Language= different from all of Asia • Fought for land= lost fights and own land • Driven back onto a single island, Hokkaido • Eventually culture disappeared
Clans • Early Japanese lived in small farming villages= ruled by clans • People= obeyed and respected members of the clan • Each clan had a chief • Clan chief= descended from nature spirits called Kami • Honored their Kami ancestors
Shinto Religion • Shinto teaching= everything in nature has a Kami • Kami= help people live and keep them from harm • Built shrines to Kami • Did ceremonies= asking Kami to bless them
Yamato Clan • Most powerful clan= lived in Yamato region • Family history= thought to be glorious • Believed descendents of most powerful Kami= Goddess of the Sun • Extended control= onto most of the Honshu Island • Yamato Clan= emperors of Japan
