Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished: A Brief History of Animal Collective • Established in 2000, the band is composed of 4 members: Avey Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), Deakin (Josh Dibb), and Geologist (Brian Weitz) • Collaborated at the Waldorf School of Baltimore, where they were told that their sound resembled that of early Grateful Dead • Began using psychedelic drugs, which helped in their exploration of experimental music • Split up between New York and Boston for College (Portner and Lennox attended NYU and Columbia; Dibb and Weitz attended BU and Brandeis) • Returned home during the summers to establish their own record label: Paw Tracks • Produced and released their first record, Danse Manatee, at Portner’s New York apartment, in 2001 • Released several subsequent records in the following years— • Sung Tongs, Strawberry Jam, and Merriweather Post Pavilion • Garnered a small fan base within the independent • music community • Began work on a visual record, ODDSAC, which they have • been working on for the past four years. Its debut • performanced, which premiered at the Guggenheim, • sold out in 10 minutes
