Tundra • Tundra means: “Marshy Plain” • Landscape: treeless, dotted with lakes, ponds and bogs • Liquid water available only 2 to 3 months a year. “artic desert”
Tundra • Location: encircles the top of the world. • See map.
Tundra Permafrost: the ground is permanently frozen. Only the top layer thaws in summer. Summer means a lot of water on the surface.
Producers of the Tundra • Not much species diversity. • Plants complete their life cycles in the very short summer months. • Lichens, mosses, sedges, grasses, dwarf willows
Consumers of the Tundra • More consumer diversity in summer • Migrating summer birds: ducks, geese, shore birds. Most take advantage of area for nesting
Consumers of the Tundra • Year round resident • Mammals: polar bears, musk ox, snowy owls, artic fox. • All animals suited for long winter. Long coat, white
Boreal Forest • Also known as the northern coniferous forest. • Made up almost completely of spruce trees and fir trees.
Boreal Forest • Also known as Taiga • Location: Lies south of tundra covers broad zone across North America Europe and Asia.
Climate of the Boreal Forest • Closer to the equator receives more energy from the Sun. • More snowfall insulates the ground no permafrost. • Still cold
Producers of the Boreal Forest • Waxy coating on needle shaped leaves prevents damage from cold and water loss during long winter. • Few plants on forest floor. Not enough sun light • Some birch, willow and aspens
Consumers of the Boreal Forest • More diversity in plant species means more diversity in animals • Moose, Beaver, Wolf, Seed Eating Birds, Red Squirrels, Voles, Summer Insects
