Biomes Part III The Temperate Forest and Grasslands Science 8. 10/07
Temperate Forest • Where? Covers most of eastern US, Great Britain, East Asia and Central Europe. See map..
Temperate Forest • This should be the easiest Biome to understand because…. You are part of this Biome!!!!!!!!
Temperate Forest Climate • Growing season long • 40 inches of rain • Cold winters/ Warm summers • Greater variety of plants = greater variety of animals.
Temperate Forest Producers • Deciduous Trees are one of the dominate types of producers. Ie. Maple, Oak, Beech • Understory of Shrubs, Fern , Wildflowers, Grasses.
Temperate Forest Consumers • A greater variety of producers means a greater variety of consumers. • Insects, Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, Mammals • This biome appeals to humans too. (Most major cities are located in this biome)
Grasslands • Grasslands cover one third of the US and large areas of all the continents.
American Grasslands • In the eastern US grasslands called prairies • In the western US. Grasslands called plains
Grassland Topography • Mostly flat with some small rolling hills. • Climate occur where annual rainfall is between 10 and 30 inches.
Grassland Producers • Many species of Grasses in the US.(from eat to west plants become shorter due to rainfall • Rainfall determines species
Grassland Consumers • Grasslands support many large grazing mammals. Bison antelopes and kangaroos
Grassland Consumers • No place to hide; swift runners or hide underground • Gophers, rabbits and prairie dogs
Grassland Consumers • Birds, Grasshoppers, • Mice, Owls. Coyote
GRASSLANDS • Many grasslands have been converted to farmland, mismanagement and overgrazing result in erosion and man made deserts
