When you have diabetes you need to eat enough, but not too much, carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and fruits. You may freely eat vegetables. Decrease fat intake and diminish salt intake, especially if you have high blood pressure. Avoid sugar or sugar-containing food. Use artificial sweeteners (saccharin, aspartame, cyclamate, acesulfame-K) instead.
Special diabetes products such as cookies, biscuits and chocolates labelled with “diet” or “for diabetics” are not recommended, as they are very often rich in fat.
However, soft drinks with artificial sweeteners (saccharin, aspartame, cyclamate, acesulfame-K) can replace the sugar-containing drinks.
Your daily food intake should be divided into at least 3 meals and 2 snacks.
