Votes) Greatest Number of Popular Votes • Henry Clay- (37 E.C.) North West • NO CANDIDATE HAD THE MAJORITY OF VOTES SO THE VOTE WENT TO THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
In The House • The House had to choose between the three highest candidates • Jackson, Adams, and Henry Clay • Henry Clay controlled the votes from the states that he had carried • Clay felt threatened by Andrew Jackson because he was Clay’s political rival in the west moved his support behind Adams • John Quincy Adams wins the election of 1924 without winning the popular vote
John Quincy’s Fate • Very much like his father • Cold, Brutish, and tactless • John Q. Adams was not liked as a president • not popularly elected • Failed to provide the infrastructure that he felt the nation needed • Passed tariffs that favored New England Manufacturers
