Highlights from Africa (17 RCEs) • 2nd African Continental meeting in Grahamstown (12 RCE and 3 RCE candidates) • Events EEASA conference on the role of RCEs in transformative social learning and sustainability practices • Preparatory meetings with Kenyan RCE towards Global Conference 2013 (the venue is secured) • Development of four capacity development modules for RCEs (taken through consultation) • Proposal on water to African Union by 6 RCEs) • Project development on co-engaged learning practices based on TK (lead by RCE Makana with engagement of RCEs from Africa and Asia) • Africa-Europe collaboration of EduCamp project

Highlights from Asia (41 RCEs) • 5th Asia-Pacific RCE Meeting hosted by RCE East Kalimantan in July • Asia-Pacific RCE Vision revisited as part of building a common strategic and action platform • Focal areas- Youth, Schools, Biodiversity, and Community, and Disaster Risk Reduction • International conference and training workshop on traditional knowledge and community health, Penang • (i) Students exchange program - RCEs Kitakyushu , Tongyeong, Ulju • (ii) Partnership of RCEs Greater Sendai and Trang on schools • (iii) Partnership of RCEs Tongyeong and Yogyakarta on ‘Bridge to the World’ project • (iv) Partnership of RCEs Yogyakarta and Penang on sharing experiences and best practices of traditional knowledge in Asia • Intercontinental collaboration of RCE Greater Western Sydney and RCE Severn on higher education • IGES&UNU-IAS Research Project on ‘Monitoring & Evaluation of ESD in the AP Region’

Highlights from Europe (26 RCEs) • European meeting of RCEs held by RCE Crete (June) • Focus on the formulation of joint projects • European RCEs position paper • Formation of the Alliance of European Regions for ESD • Meeting of German RCEs (March) on joint projects (next meeting in 2013 in Vechta) • RCE Espoo and OldenburgerMünsterland presented the RCE-project on the BBCC Conference in Savonlinna, Finland • RCEs OldenburgerMünsterland, Rhine-Meusse, Munich proposal on integration of ESD into the curricula of vocational schools. • RCE Graz-Styria and RCECandidate Usti nadLabern - MOSUR Student excursion to Styria (Sept. 2012) • RCEs Cairo, CreiasOeste, Limerick, Graz-Styria - EduCamp Project (Education for Sustainable Development beyond the Campus) • Number of engagement with the Copernicus Alliance

Highlights from Americas (16 RCEs) • Conference call of RCEs in Americas hosted by RCE Grand Rapids • Planning International conference “ESD Interactions in Post-Rio+20 context” – (April or May 2013) • RCEs bilateral collaborations (RCE Saskatchewan/RCE Greater Western Sydney, RCE Grand Rapids/RCE Rhine Meuse, RCE Bogota/RCE East Midlands) • Mentoring of new RCEs • Priorities: • Creation of identity for RCEs in Americas • Focal themes - training/reorienting teachers in ESD, creating ESD living learning laboratories, connecting with business/private sector through innovation, & entrepreneurship; connecting with Indigenous communities and Youth)

Road towards Rio+20 • Engaged with 15 RCEs to analyze their practices on sustainable consumption and production and livelihood • First publication in the series of thematic ESD and SD publications • Informed engagement with four side events with multiple stakeholders • Provides a background for discussion on capacity development in these areas and questions: • how to position RCE community globally with regards to SCP and livelihood practices? • What does it take to fulfill the agreed ambition?

Road towards COP11 • Work with 16 RCEs on 17 practices on biodiversity and traditional knowledge • Publication • Foundation for the events during COP11 • Ground for discussion of next steps including • What capacity is necessary within the RCEs in order to strengthen learning and practices for sustainable biodiversity use and work with different knowledges and • How to position RCE community in this area

  15. Ways forward • Capacity development modules (initial steps by African RCEs): • Transformative learning, • collaboration partnership and networking, • governance and • management research and development • Capacity development in thematic areas • Assessment as learning (including assessment of own competencies and capabilities) • Strategic engagement with relevant policy processes and networks
