  4. Today’s Objectives • In a group, design a visual representation of a specific component and orally explain your reasoning to the whole group. • Discuss and writeour observations of the video on the S.I. observation form. • Record on the survey • Small and whole group: discuss patterns revealed in dot assessment Participants will: • Review and define the components of sheltered instruction. • Observe and identifycomponents and techniques in a video demonstration lesson. • Self-evaluate your current implementation of the components/features of SI (whether you were already implementing or began during this training) • Identify a focus for implementation (both for the remainder of this year and for next year)

  5. Lesson Delivery Have you ever written a fabulous lesson plan, with all the bells and whistles you could think of, but when you taught the lesson it went far differently than you had planned? Take a moment to think about such a lesson and then share your experience with your shoulder partner (one minute each).

  10. Review and Assessment • Although this is the last component in the Sheltered Instruction model, it is not the least! • Assessment is not only done at the end of instruction; it needs to be ongoing. • Assessment should inform instruction.

  11. Activities for Assessment • Stand Up, Sit Down • Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down • Fist of Five (“Handy” Lickert) • Clickers • Self Assessment Rubrics (on an exit slip) • Mini-assessment (one or two key questions on an exit slip)

SI Visual Representation Activity • At your component expert tables, • Look over the Sheltered Instruction resource as a group • Design a visual representation of your assigned component (look at your component on table tent) • Identify 1 person from your team to share your product with the whole group • Provide your teams’ definition / summary of the component and your reasoning for the visual.

  17. 1. Complete the Self-Evaluation • 2. Place 3 stars on the Component Charts that represent: • Areas that, according to your Self-Assessment, would benefit from a stronger focus. • 3. Debrief in groups and report out (no repeats) • What do you see? • What are the implications? • How does that relate to my practice? Implementation… Dot Assessment/Star Assessment

  18. Have we met today’s objectives? • In a group, design a visual representation of a specific component and orally explain your reasoning to the whole group.
