  2. Kentucky Facts • 4 million population • 267,000 children under 5 • 120 counties • 56 local health departments • Switched from universal to VFC in 1994 • Approx. 30% of children Medicaid-enrolled • 2002 NIS 72.3% (4:3:1:3:3)

  3. Early/Initial Efforts • 1993-94 limited funding of pilot projects • 2001 Project Officer Visit/Recommendation • 2002 Funding, state RFP attempt, redirection of funds (from FA contracts to DA other) • Late 2002 statement of work issued and contract awarded

  4. Statement of Work • Assess need for a population-based immunization registry • Define user population and their technical readiness • Determine feasibility of deploying a statewide, web-based system

  5. Statement of Work • Provide recommendations on improving IT capacity • Assess available software for “best fit” • Develop preliminary implementation plan • Develop preliminary budget requirements

  6. Needs Assessment/Feasibility Study • Engage stakeholders through focus groups and interviews • Conduct provider survey • Review program material • Document program requirements • Evaluate technical capabilities • Prepare report

  7. Key Observations and Findings • Increasing use of IT and the Internet in healthcare settings • Strong support and encouragement by all stakeholders interviewed • Concerns about cost, privacy, extra work • KDPH resource needs
