Amazon River • Read page 232 – Major river systems • It’s the 2nd longest river in the world • It is the largest river system in the world • It has over 1,000 tributaries! • It contains 20% (1/5) of ALL THE FRESH RIVER WATER IN THE WORLD! • It drains the Amazon Basin…which also contains the Amazon Rain Forest.

Benefits of the Amazon Rainforest • One half of the world’s species have a home in the rainforest. • (It contains the greatest variety of species on the planet.) • Rainforests produce about 1/3 of the world’s oxygen.
Animals of the Rainforest • THIS IS AN 18 FOOT MILD MANNERED ANACONDA.
ANIMALS • The Collared Peccary is one of the most widespread of Amazon mammals. They live in large herds of up to 50 individuals, foraging for a variety of food including fruits, seeds, leaves and small animals.
ANIMALS • THIS FELLA IS ONE OF THE LAZIEST OF ALL ANIMALS. • HE IS THE SLOWEST OF ALL LAND ANIMALS; MOVING AT 1/100TH A MILE PER HOUR!! • AND HE SLEEPS ¾ OF HIS LIFE!!
ANIMALS: MONKEYS!! • THERE ARE MORE MONKEYS IN THE AMAZON RAIN FOREST THAN ANY- WHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD.
ANIMALS • THIS IS AN ANTEATER. • ITS NAME SAYS IT ALL. IT HAS NO JAW OR EVEN TEETH!!
SPIDERS!! • USUALLY THESE GUYS ARE AS HARMLESS AS A BEE STING. BUT SOME OF THESE CATCH PREY LIKE BIRDS AND BATS.
EWW!! LEECHES! • THIS LEECH IS 6’’ LONG BUT IS THE LARGEST SPECIES, REACHING UP TO 18’’. LEECHES HAVE A MEDICINE IN THEM THAT HELP RID BLOOD CLOTS THAT CAUSE HEART ATTACKS.
FISH! • THIS IS A THORNY CATFISH. • WRONG CONTACT WITH THIS GUY COULD CAUSE CONSIDERABLE PAIN!
THE STRAWBERRY POISON DART FROG! • THE NAME COMES FROM THE WAY THE INDIANS USED THEM FOR AN INGREDIANT THAT THEY COATED THEIR DARTS IN THAT MADE LETHAL CONTACT ON THEIR PREY • HANDLE W/ EXTREME CARE!!

Other benefits of the rainforest 4. Tourists travel to see the rain forest and spend money in local businesses and hotels.
Why so much deforestation?? Try to come up with at least 4 reasons for deforestation in the Amazon. • View video.
Causes of Deforestation • Cattle ranching land! • Farm land! • For natural resources 3. – trees (paper and lumber), mining for gold and other minerals • Road construction and growing cities (urbanization!)
