  3. Bed Prepping • Great gardens start the FALL before! • Fertilizer • Keep microorganisms happy • Prep for next year when perennials need it • Burn off plant material – mineral form • Manure on top and leach down or “turn over” • Mulch • Traps water • Adds nutrients (safely)

  4. Timing • When the heck do you plant things outside? • Do you use seeds? • Seedlings? • Canes, what are canes?

  5. Bring Out the Grow Tables! • Sow in pots and get ready to count BACKWARDS! • Days to Harvest/Days to Maturity • Peppers take 70 days to mature, once planted at 6-8 weeks old! • It takes 8-12 days to germinate, and then an additional 4-6 weeks before ready to transplant. • When should we plant peppers as seeds if we want them ready by our September 15 frost date?

  6. Getting Seeds ready for Transplant • Bringing plants outside can be quite a shock! • We use cold frames to get them used to it

  7. Cold Frames • Typically put plants in it over night as long as it stays above freezing • Cold frame will hold steady at 50 degrees! • Prep seedlings for at least 1 week.

  8. Duck & Cover? • In danger of frost during growth? • Cans! • In danger of frost during harvest? • Blankets!

  9. Spacing • How to plant your garden • Tilling? Needs to be wide enough to troll down • Beans and Corn? Need skinny rows for pollination • Potatoes and Tomatoes? Bushy plants to grow into • Squash? Need room to roam and vine • Perennials? Can’t creep into their space! • Hence why garden plans are so important!

  12. Rules from the Batie Garden • Plant them thick, thin out the survivors for proper spacing! Crowded plants are just as bad as none! • Birds • Cats • Dogs • Anything digging through your garden can disturb the seed bed!

  13. Rules More! • Small seeds – sprinkle. Large seeds – place!

  14. S’more Rules • Tools make great measuring devices! • Potatoes – 2 “feet” • Tomatoes & Peppers – 1 “trowel” and some apart

  15. Hills! • Certain plants do better when humans add dirt around the roots or plant the seeds in mounds • Potatoes • Corn – ridging • Squash

  16. Climbers! • Let your vining crops vine! They need this for stability, you need this for finding the veggies! • Beans • Peas • Squash
