  3. Screen- Rule 4-39 & 10-6 • ~definition -a legal action taken by a player who, without causing contact, delays or prevents an opponent from reaching a desired position.

  4. To establish a legal screening position: • The screener may face any direction. • Time and distance are relevant. • The screener must be stationary, except when both are moving in the same path and in the same direction.

  5. Stationary opponent • Front/side – field of vision • Short of contact

  6. Stationary opponent • Back – blind • one normal step backward without contact

  7. Moving opponent • Allow time and distance to avoid contact. • No more than 2 strides.

  8. The player behind is responsible for the contact, even if the player in front slows or stops. PENNDOT:CRASHES AREN’T ACCIDENTS Moving opponents~same path / same direction

  12. CRASH RESPONSIBILITY • Screened player should try to avoid contact. • Blind screen may lead to extreme contact. Ruled incidental contact if opponent attempts to stop on contact. • Players may not force their way through or around a screen.

  14. QUESTIONS?

  15. TEST A1, in attempting to screen, takes a stationary position in the path of moving B1. The position of A1 is so close that B1 cannot avoid A1 and contact results. Blocking foul on A1. Team control.

  16. Test A1, in attempting to screen, takes a stationary position in the path of moving B1. The position of A1 is far enough away so that B1, who is aware of the position of A1, has an opportunity to avoid A1 but contact still results. Charging foul on B1.

  17. Test • A2 and A3 set a screen on B4. B4 pushes his way between the screeners to guard A4. • Pushing or charging foul on B4.

  18. Test • A1 cuts through the lane. B1 who is guarding A2 jumps in front of A1 (both feet down) to prevent A1’s getting through the lane. Contact occurs immediately. • Blocking foul on B1.

  19. Test • Point guard A1 passes to A2 on the wing. As A1 cuts toward the basket, A3 leaves the post and moves toward the ball. A1 collides with B3 (covering A3), leaving A3 open to receive a pass from A2. • Illegal screen. Blocking foul A1.

  20. Test • During a “stack” throw-in, A2 extends an elbow to screen B4 – contact occurs. A4 catches the ally-oop and scores. • Blocking foul on A2. Cancel the basket. This is NOT a team control foulB4 will shoot. If Team B is in the bonus, B4 will shoot.
