History • The Vikings started to live in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden in the mid-8th century. • Viking culture originated in Scandinavia. • The word Viking means pirate or raider in the Old Norse language. • The Viking culture lasted about 400 years.
Viking Childhood • Viking children were considered adults at ten years old. • Children were expected to help around the farm. • Boys and girls learned different jobs. • Girls were sometimes Vikings.
Viking Families • The Vikings had a family- oriented society. • Most of their activities were around the fireplace or hearth in the middle of the living room. • Viking women were expected to do all the home chores. • Families lived on farms that grew barley and oats for bread, as well as corn, onions, garlic, & cabbages.
Viking Men & Women • Men had a shorter life span. • Some of the men went on the raids • Women were suppose to run the household.
Clothing • Men wore different cloths depending on where they lived, how rich or poor they were,and how important they were. • They wore certain clothes that were comfortable. • The men’s clothes were made from woolen cloth,and furs. • Viking women wore long linen dresses. • Over the dresses they wore a long woolen tunic.
VIKING LONG HOUSES • Viking long houses had grass for theroof. • Viking long houses usually had one room. • The long houses usually had a hole in the middle of the roof so the smoke could get out of the house.
$ VIKING MONEY $ • The Vikings in Norway made their own coins. • Evidence from hoards tell us that foreign coins, in particular Angelo - Saxon, were imitated in Scandinavia. • From the 9th century to the 11th century there were a lot of silver coins in Scandinavia.
THE DRAKKAR • The Drakkar’s sail had blood - red stripes to scare its enemies. • The ships were usually 28 meters long. • The Drakkar stayed close to land. • Some people called the Drakkar a dragon ship because there was a dragon carved in it.
The Knarr • The Knarr was used to travel long distances. • It was 16 meters long,5 meters wide,and 2 meters high. • People rowed the Knarr by walking forward and backward. • The sail was stitched in a cross pattern. • It sometimes held live stock.
BERSERKERS • Berserkers took hallucinogenic mushrooms. • They would go to the side of the ship waving their swords in anticipation of a battle that created fear in the enemies. • They usually dressed in bear skins. • The word berserk entered American vocabulary.
Runes The Viking alphabet had 24 letters. Vikings pulled stones with runes on them out of a bag to keep evil spirits away. Vikings carved runes into stones or knives. They labeled house hold items with runes.
The “thing”or “ting” was the Viking word for legislative assembly and court. • A criminal was brought here to stand trial. • There was no laws against war with others. • Holmgang was a common way to solve disputes. Laws Viking
MUSIC • Vikings sang songs while rowing their ships. • Time went faster when they sang songs. • The Vikings had a “lokk” call. • They used singing to talk to people far away.
Tools • Fishing spears were made from iron and wood. • Iron ore was used to make some tools. • Sickle blades were used for harvesting. • Grain was ground into flour with querns. • Almost all of the Vikings best weapons were made of iron.
FUNERALS • Large ships marked royal burials. • It is hard for archaeologists to find remains because at funerals the ships were burned. • Rich Vikings were laid in their ships surrounded by jewels and valuables. • Sickle blades were found in graves.
