FLOODS By Brendan G. During a flood water overflows and submerges land.

Floods are caused by heavy rain that pour lots of water in rivers and other waterways, which can’t hold all that water. Water then flows over or breaks the banks causing it to go over the surrounding land and put it underwater. Floods can also come from large amounts of snow melting or from tidal waves.
Floods mostly occur near a river or a coastal area. They often occur near low lying areas and places below sea level. They also happen by areas with mountain runoff.
The Indus Valley Civilization was wiped out partly because of the floods of the Indus. Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro were the two cities of this civilization. They were both highly advanced. But because of the Indus’s unpredictable floods they were both wiped away.
Floods have also impacted the US. One of these is Mississippi. In May 2011 record rainfall happened in Mississippi. Combined with other weather events these floods were expected to reach 20 -30 feet high. Many places in the area are threatened, but they believe they should be able to avoid the catastrophic flooding.
