Geomedia For StreetSaver-GIS IntegrationLRS, Dynseg, and the case for usingGeomedia to integrate asset data Adam Lodge Geospatial Systems Developer Farallon Geographics September, 2009
Full Disclosure: about Farallon • System developers/integrators with emphasis in GIS • Vendor-agnostic approach to technical solutions. • Competent in multitude of technical platforms. • Strength with Intergraph Geospatial Solutions • Client list includes: • Government (all levels), NGO’s, Commercial www.fargeo.com
What is StreetSaver? “StreetSaver® v.9 is a tool helping cities and counties make informed, and timely, decisions about their pavements - preventing problems through judicious maintenance, and diagnosing and repairing problems that exist in a cost-effective manner.” • Inventories pavement sections • Evaluates “pavement condition” (PCI) • Recommends pavement treatment projects that optimize overall PCI within user-defined budget www.fargeo.com
What is StreetSaver? cont… • Desktop application, accessed over the web with remote desktop (more about that later). • Includes a built-in GIS module designed to operate in isolation from a City’s enterprise GIS. www.fargeo.com
The Basic Problem • StreetSaver is natively non-spatial • Street segment definitions never match up between StreetSaver and a City’s native GIS • There is no joining field between the two systems www.fargeo.com
• 4 • 3.2 • 1.8 Hwy 6 • 1 The Solution: Linear Referencing www.fargeo.com
N E • • 4.1 0.9 • • 1.8 3.2 Linear Referencing Geographic Referencing Linear Referencing • Datum: NAD83 (for example) • Datum: Linear Features, Road Name & Measurement Attributes • Geocoding: Creating GIS features from tabular data with coordinates • Dynamic Segmentation: Creating GIS features from tabular data with road names and measures www.fargeo.com
Importance of LRS/Dynamic Segmentation • Minimizes GIS data management - • no need to duplicate and re-segment street geometry • Allows ‘event’ measure data to reside in the appropriate system - PMS • Use the LRS to Integrate data from other systems – • CMMS (streets, signs, sidewalks), ADT, speed limits, bike routes, accidents, …anything that can be referenced against a street www.fargeo.com
Geomedia Integration Workflow 1 of 2 • Add Route identifier to street centerlines • Generally based on street name • Use StreetID from StreetSaver at Cities, use Road Number at Counties • LRS-enable street centerline network using Transportation Manager • East to West, South to North – Standards based • Manually calibrate tricky segments (loops, dual carriage-ways) using Interactive LRS Calibration www.fargeo.com
Geomedia Integration Workflow 2 of 2 • Develop Pavement Event Data • Create point features for each beginning and end locations of each section where possible: • Intersections • Addresses (using geocoding) • Offsets from known locations, etc… • Get creative • Convert “geographic” points to “LRS measures” using Transportation Manager “LRS Conversion Tool” • Generate measure values manually using a geomedia ‘inbox’ www.fargeo.com
