What is pornography • Not defined in the Films and Publications Act • Generally described as films of a sexually explicit nature • May or may not show the genitalia area • May or may not have a story line
The threat of pornography • Sexual exploitation of women and children • Impacts negatively on people that have to work with pornography e.g classifiers and child protection workers • Potray mechanical use of sex and not necessarily an expression of love
The threat of pornography • Exposure to children bad for their wellbeing especially the psychological impact • Overexposure to adults may lead to sexual dysfunction • Proven to be addictive and difficult to stop (s.t.o.p) • Linked in 90% of cases in a Dhabicharan (2002) research to sexual abuse by young sexual offenders (childline SA) • Same research proved that adult porn is as damaging as child pornography
The other effects of pornography • Contribution to the overall economy • The demand seems to be high hence the market • Forms close to 60% of the regulation fees generated by the FPB • Creates jobs for the models • Contributes to the improved sexual functioning of couples
Regulation Aspect • Encourage open and guided discussion on issues of sexuality • Conduct more comprehensive research into the effects of pornography on the South African society in particular • Regulate the industry more coherently and systematically • Establish the contribution of this market in the economy • Find a balance between freedom of expression and the protection of children
