  3. Purpose of Written Assignments • Promotes critical thinking • Promotes organizational thinking • Promotes understanding of content • Assesses student’s ability to problem-solve • Assesses higher level learning • Assesses student’s ability to express ideas

  4. Written Assignments PROs Cons Time consuming for both the professor and student. Ineffective if important elements are not included, i.e. clear objectives. Ineffective if same assignments repeated. • Allows for assessment in didactic and clinical settings • Challenges students to express their own ideas, beliefs, values, etc. • Multiple methods available to professors.

Written Assignments/Virtual Clinical Tools Reliability Validity • Writing assignments have reliability and validity with if appropriate rubrics are used along with clear, concise, objectives to assist students. • Virtual clinical tools have reliability and validity, but only for non-complex basic skills.
