Thanks to Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc., and a dedicated group representing five Traders Point neighborhoods, the greenspace surrounding the INDOT salt barn was planted with additional trees and shrubs on Saturday, October 24. These latest embellishments to the landscape were phase 2 of a beautification effort launched in November 2007, when Traders Point neighbors, Butler and IUPUI students, and KIB volunteers planted 100 native trees and shrubs and spread 100 cubic yards of mulch on newly established planting beds around the INDOT maintenance unit near the 71st Street/I-65 interchange. The aim of the landscaping was to blend the facility into the surrounding woodland, selectively masking unsightly views and creating a fitting entrance to the historic Traders Point neighborhoods and Eagle Creek Park. Phase 2 aimed for a thicker planting of shrubs in the beds to shade the soil and keep weeds from sprouting. New mulch was also be spread to maintain a neat appearance.
