  2. Hello my name is Caroline Nulty

  3. I am the named School Nurse for your chosen Primary School. Now your child is starting school I take over from your Health Visitor. I have been invited to come along to introduce myself and give you a brief presentation about my role within the school.

  4. Things to think about before September • Immunisations – are they up to date? • Have they received their pre-school boosters MMR and Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio (DTP) • If your child has specific medical needs please ensure you complete a school health care plan and have correctly labelled medication to bring in with them on their first day

  5. Role of the School Nurse. • Health Promotion i.e. • Healthy Eating • Hand Washing • Puberty Year 5 and 6 • National Childhood Measurement Programme (NCMP) • Health Questionnaire • Heights and Weights reception and year 6 • Nocturnal Enuresis (bedwetting)

  6. Role of the School Nurse (cont) • General Health Advice • Face to face meetings • Telephone consultations • Referrals to other agencies • Hearing Screens

  7. Healthy Eating • Interactive session teaching the children about the importance of a healthy diet.

  8. Hand-washing • Presentation given to children on the importance of clean hands and the dangers of bacteria. • Practical session using fluorescent light box

  9. N.C.M.P • Health Questionnaire • Sent out to parents during 1st term (prompt return is gratefully appreciated). • If consent for height and weight given your child will be measured in school. • Results are sent home with your child that day or as soon as practically possible. • If you have raised any concerns regarding your child's health, advice leaflets will be enclosed with your results.

  10. Nocturnal Enuresis (bed-wetting) • Bed-wetting is still common in a child of reception age. • During reception, advice is given on fluid management and bladder capacity. • Should symptoms persist then a full profile and treatment programme will be offered.

  11. How to access School Nursing Service We are currently operating a referral system, therefore if you require support, please approach: • School Receptionists/Teachers • GP • Myself – via telephone Who will happily help you complete the form
