FCAT Countdown DAY 2 – PART 1 Similarity and Proportions Benchmark: C.2.4.1 Use the left and right arrow keys to navigate through this presentation.
Objectives • To use proportions to solve problems with similar figures
Agenda • Review Similarity and Proportions • Examples Problems • Link to Practice Problems
Review • Similar (~) figures have the same shape but different sizes • Corresponding angles are congruent • Corresponding sides are proportional • Use proportions to solve problems with similar figures • Proportions state that two ratios are equal • Cross multiply to solve proportions
Example 1 – Similar Figures Given two similar triangles, find the value of the missing side. 30 cm x 8 cm 16 cm Note that the following proportions are also acceptable: 16 30 30 x 30 16 --- = --- --- = --- --- = --- 8 x 16 8 x 8 • Set up a proportion • 16 8 • --- = ---- • 30 x • “16 is to 30 as 8 is to x”
Solving the Proportion • Cross multiply to solve the proportion 16 8 ------- = ------- 30 x 16 x = 30 * 8 16 x= 240 (divide by 16 on both sides) x = 15
Example 2 – Similar Figures • Write and solve a proportion to find the value of y, given the two similar triangles. • Set up a proportion • 12 8 • ------ = ------ • 16 y 8 cm 12 m y 16 m
Solving the Proportion 12 8 ------ = ------ 16 y 12 y = 16*8 12y = 128 y = 10.66
