Monday, Sept 15 Bell ringer- In your composition book, make a new page: “Unit 2 Age of Contact – Vocabulary” (reserve front and back of page for vocabulary) Add the first word – Indigenous- native people who live in the land before Europeans arrived. THEN – make another page in your composition (front and back). Call it “Unit 2 Notes”. You will use these sheets to take notes you think could be helpful to study.

Spain in 1400’s • Spain chased out the Moors (Muslims from North Africa) after hundreds of years of occupation • Created a warrior or soldier class in Spain • Learned that conquering new lands could gain wealth to bring back to Spain READ Page 57 (starting at “Solders of Spain”) and page 58 What stands out in your mind?
The 3 G’s Spanish goals: G (Gold) – search for wealth G (God) – desire to spread Roman Catholic faith to natives G (Glory) – quest for personal glory for conquering heroes What do you think of those goals?
Activity On the next page in your composition book, write a conversation between Columbus and Queen Isabella when Columbus returned from the New World. Example: Columbus: Hello, Your Majesty, I have returned from my voyage. Queen: Hello, did you find the route to India? Columbus: Well…. Not exactly. I found an entirely new continent that we didn’t know was there. Queen: OK….. Tell me about this new continent………………
Exit Ticket On a piece of paper, write about whether or not you think Columbus’s trip was successful or not. And why.
Tuesday, Sept 16th Bell ringer- On a piece of paper, why do you think the Spanish will begin to explore and conquer Mexico and the land of Texas?
Vocabulary Add to your vocabulary list: Conquistadors – Spanish conquerors who came to America Tribute – payment of food or other valuables because someone is forcing you to pay. Viceroyalty – a land ruled by an official (a “viceroy”) chosen by the monarch
Conquistadors and Cortes Legend of Seven Cities of Cibola – conquistadors searched for them and the wealth they supposedly contained 1519 – Cortes landed at what is now Mexico 1521 – Cortes conquers the Aztecs around what is now Mexico City Read pages 60 to 63 (stop when you get to “The Narvaez Disaster”.) What stands out in your mind? In your composition book, make a list of the advantages that the Spanish had in conquering the Aztecs. (can be on same page as Columbus dialogue with Queen Isabella)
Captain Alonso Alvarez de Pineda In 1519, Pineda searched for a water route to the Pacific Ocean. He mapped the Gulf of Mexico and Texas coast, so the Spanish now knew there was only solid land and no water route to the Pacific. Look at the map on page 55

Narvaez Expedition and Cabeza de Vaca Narvaez expedition to conquer Florida to northern Mexico - met disaster from the start - left Florida on 5 crude rafts; miserable journey in Gulf of Mexico November 6, 1528 – first group landed in Texas READ pages 63, 64, 65 What stands out to you? Cabeza de Vaca– lived among natives for several years traveling through Texas. Discovered bison; gained a reputation as a “shaman”. See map on page 55. In 1542, he published an account of his time in Texas – more excitement about wealth.

Marcos de Niza and Estevanico’sExepedition Estevanico – Muslim slave who had traveled with Cabeza de Vaca; didn’t want to go back to Texas, but was forced to go. Marcos de Niza led the expedition in 1538 (ADD TO YOUR TIMELINE) Estevanico was sent ahead to scout the area; reported back that he had found the Seven Cities and a wealthy city of Cibola; but then was killed by natives. Marcos de Niza halted the expedition and returned to Mexico; claimed to have seen Cibola, silver and gold.
Closure Discuss -why do you think Niza and Estevanico claimed to have found riches and how did that impact other Spaniards?

Francisco Coronado 1540 – set out with 1,000 men to conquer Cibola and take its treasure. Found Cibola, but no treasure. An Indian guide, El Turco, leads them eastward to find wealthy empire of Quivira. READ Bottom of page 67 to top of page 69 Did Coronado ever find treasure? What did he find?
Hernando De Soto and Luis de Moscoso Alvarado De Soto’s expedition set out from Florida in 1539 to search for treasure. • 1542, they crossed the Mississippi River and enter Texas • De Soto died of an illness; Luis de Moscoso Alvarado took command • Finding no treasure, the expedition decided to head to Mexico. • Entering Texas from the east, they met Caddo Indians who greeted them with “Tay-yas! Tay-yas!” meaning friends. From which we get “Texas”. • Finding no treasure, they returned to the Mississippi River, built boats and sailed for Mexico. Along the way, they discovered petroleum seeping from the floor of the Gulf of Mexico
