Problem/Issue • Sexting has made national news over the past year after stories of young men and women taking their own lives due to embarrassment over sexts which were shared with people they were not intended to be shared with began appearing on local news reports across the country. • A large issue which pertains to this subject is the question of privacy and whether or not the people responsible for sharing personal information and photos of others can be held legally responsible for their actions.
What is Sexting? • Sexting-- the sharing of sexually explicit content through cell phone messages. • It call for a deeper evaluation of the issue at hand and beg the question of what should be done to protect those affected by sexting through national, state, and local laws. • Grassroots movements started by activists speaking out about the issue, and cell phone providers who put the cell phones in the young hands of middle school and high school students.
Article 12 • No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honor and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.
Case Study Jessica Logan • Jessie Logan was 18 years old and about to graduate from Sycamore High School when a nude picture she sent to her boyfriend was sent to hundreds of students at schools around the Tri-State.
Who is Responsible…. • The responsibility lies on the person who sent the first message…. OR • The people responsible for sharing these personal messages who are accountable for the ensuing demise of sexters.
As more and more young people have their lives affected by sexting, more and more people will look to the government to help stop the growing problem and attach penalties for those people who want to continue this potentially harmful practice. • People raise the question of how the government can punish those who share information over text messaging without violating their privacy rights as American citizens.
Solutions • Sexters being prosecuted. • Legislation to protect minors from sextingoffenses. • Protection of 1st Amendment rights • Jessica Logan’s Family movement. • Activist against sexting believe that educating young people on how taking responsibility for their actions is the first step. • Cell Phone providers take action. • Implement penalties that young people are aware of. • Better communication between parents and children about proper cell phone usage.
