  1. Sisyphus, Poseidon, and Orpheus. Sydney and Nick

  2. God - Poseidon • Poseidon (God of the sea, horses and earthquakes) was brother to zeus and hades • He was father of hero theseus • his parents were cronus and rhea • the symbol of poseidon's power was his trident, which he used to whip up massive title waves and earthquakes.

  3. athens • there was a breathtaking competition between two very powerful gods, Poseidon and Athena, over a city. The city had caught the eye of the two gods and they both wanted to become the patron god/godess, but only one could have it. So this lead to a competition held by King Cecrops, that Poseidon and Athena took part in.  King Cecrops told them to compete against each other by seeing who could give the city the best gift. Poseidon gave the city his gift by striking the ground with his trident, which caused a small spring of salt water to arise. Athena gave the city her gift by planting a small olive tree beside the spring. Unfortunately, since the spring was salt water, the people of the city couldn’t put it to any use. However, Athena’s tree could be used for food, firewood, shelter, and decoration. So King Cecrops accepted Athena’s tree and named her Patron Goddess of the city, it was then named after her. The city is now called Athens. Of course Poseidon didn’t take this loss lightly and took out his anger by sending a monstrous flood to the Attic Plain, to punish the Athenians for not choosing him.

  4. hero - orpheus • Orpheus was known for his charming and soothing music  • Orpheus's parentage is unclear and though all sources agree his mother was the Muse of epic poetry, Calliope, there is dispute over the identity of his father. So his father will remain as unknown for now. • Orpheus's music and song are said to have been so enticing that they could charm the very birds from the trees, soothe Cerberus and bring the furies to tears. • orpheus is also known for assisting with the quest to find the golden fleece.

  5. attempt to rescue eurydice • there was the tragic death of Eurydice, wife of Orpheus. at their wedding, Eurydice was bitten by a viper in the tall grass and died shortly after. However, Orpheus and his powerful tunes hadn’t given up on her yet. He paid a visit to the underworld to go get his wife back.  He convinced Persephonewith his beautiful tunes to allow him to bring her back.Persephone said yes, but on one condition, to stay in front of Eurydice and to not look back at her until they reached the over world. So Orpheus agreed and took Eurydice. When they reached the exit tunnel, Orpheus was excited about seeing the light and looked back to Eurydice, completely forgetting about his agreement. He watched as Eurydice faded away back to Hades right before his eyes.

  6. The myth of Sisyphus • Zeus had kidnapped the nymph Aegina, daughter of asopus, and Sisyphus witnessed it. Sisyphus spilled Zeus’s secret to Aegina’s father and therefore was ordered to be chained up in the underworld by Zeus (Since he spilled his secret).Sisyphus had then cleverly tricked and chained up Thanatos (Keeper of Sisyphus), and returned to the over world. With Thanatos trapped, mortals could not die of course, which annoyed Ares who couldn’t kill men in war. Ares got fed up and went to go see what was happening and found himself in the situation. He freed Thanatos and turned Sisyphus over to Thanatos. However, before Sisyphus went back to the underworld (died), he told his wife to throw his naked body into the middle of the public square (To test her love for him). When she didn’t do so, Sisyphus was enraged and asked Persephone if he could return to the over world to scold his wife for disrespecting him. Persephone allowed him to return to the over world to do so, so he did, but refused to return back to the underworld. As punishment for his trickery, Sisyphus was made to roll a huge boulder up a steep hill for an eternity. the reason why it was for an eternity, was because before he could reach the top of the hill, the massive boulder would always roll back down to the bottom, forcing him to begin again. Zeus had enchanted the boulder to roll away from Sisyphus every time he got close to the top. This meant he would never reach the top.
