Written and Oral Conventions Standard WOC 1.2: Understand sentence construction (e.g., parallel structure, subordination, proper placement of modifiers) and proper English usage (e.g. consistency of verb tenses).
Terms for Review Dependent Clause: a clause that is used in conjunction with an independent clause and acts as a modifier. It is a sentence fragment (it cannot be a stand-alone sentence). Independent Clause: a clause that is a stand-alone sentence. It contains a subject and a predicate and makes a complete thought when read by itself.
Directions Determine whether the underlined portion of the following sentences are dependent or independent clauses. For example: I rode my bicycle up the mountain yesterday. Answer: dependent clause (‘up the mountain yesterday’ is NOT a complete sentence.
