The United Nations promotes trade for its potential to foster economic development and eradicate poverty UNECE develops, maintains and leads the implementation of trade-related recommendations, standards and tools This activity is carried out through UN/CEFACT (the United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business) which is open to the participation of any business or government UNECE developed standards are open and technology neutral, and will cater to the needs of large or small companies and of developed and developing countries alike. UN/CEFACT – Mission and Focus Mission To deliver e-business solutions which can improve the ability of business, trade and administrative organizations within developed, developing and transitional economies, to trade products and relevant services more effectively - and so contribute to the growth of global commerce. Focus The worldwide facilitation of national AND international transactions, through the simplification and harmonization of processes, procedures and information flows.

Trade Facilitation Strategy Strategy • Simplifying and harmonizing overall trade procedures (and where possible and desirable, the elimination of unnecessary ones); • simplifying, standardizing and harmonizing the many documents required for a trade transaction • simplifying and coordinating administrative procedures at border crossing, especially those related to Customs but also including other agencies such as Health, Safety and Security • enhancing the flow of information that controls the goods throughout the transaction process (through the application of information and communication technology, the standardization of electronic data elements, ect.) • simplifying payment systems to ensure that the transaction is completed and the seller gets paid • enhancing trust assessment through a better exchange of information
Electronic Business Strategy Strategy • Cross-sectoral analysis (to promote interoperability and supply chain synchronicity); • Business process and information modeling (to capture user requirements, independent of any specific technology, through the creation of business collaboration models and business requirements specifications); and • Mapping of new technologies as they emerge (e.g., eXtensible Markup Language (XML), Web Services, shared and/or distributed objects, etc.).
