  2. How to Optimise Footage from Your Dash Cam Most people buy dash cams because they want to capture footage in case of an accident or event whilst driving. Given that dash cam footage often forms part of the evidence that helps to assign liability in the event of a crash, it’s important that the quality of the footage is good. Below, we are going to look at the various things that you can do to ensure optimum picture quality. The Camera and Recording Device Itself The first thing you need to do is to make sure that your camera and recording device are up the job. Here are a few things to look for:

  3. The Camera and Recording Device

  4. • Check that the dash cam records in high definition (HD). HD enables the camera to pick up much more detail than older types of camera. For example, in HD, it’s much easier to read number plates – something that is of vital importance when it comes to evidence footage. • Choose a camera with a wide viewing angle. The camera needs to be able to capture as much of the landscape as possible. A decent angle starts from around 140o • Choose a camera that can record in a number of different conditions. For example, a camera with enhanced night vision and the ability to record in bright sunlight.

  5. • Choose a device with plenty of memory, so that it can take a decent amount of footage. You need to choose one that records over the top of old footage. This might sound odd, because you might imagine that there’s a chance you need to go back and look at old footage, but the chances are that you will save accident footage straightaway. When choosing one that can overwrite, make sure it records over older footage first. If you don’t choose one that can overwrite, the you risk forgetting to change the memory over, and the device will stop recording The Position of the Camera It is important that you position the camera well. Some people advise that you hide the camera, but this is ridiculous advice. First, there’s no point because people know that there are vehicle journey recorders in use.

  6. Secondly, when people see a dash cam, it makes them drive more carefully around you – they will give you a wider berth; it’s better to prevent the crash in the first place, than to have evidence of a crash.

  8. OK, so make sure that the camera is visible. Following this, the best place to mount a camera is in the centre of the windscreen, and preferably, at the same height as the rear view mirror, so from the driver’s perspective, it’s effectively hidden. This way, it doesn't obstruct the driver’s view, but it does capture as much of the road as possible. Angle the Camera Correctly • So many vehicle journey recorders capture the skyline instead of the traffic. This is why you often find footage of comets, the aura borealis, and various other sky phenomenon. These people have positioned their cameras in a less than optimum position.

  9. Make sure that the camera is pointing at other vehicles on the road, rather than capturing too much sky. This also serves the purpose of minimising things like glare. Keep Your Windscreen Clean Finally, dirt and debris can obscure the view from the camera, so make sure that you clean the windscreen regularly.
