The Accreditation Process • Designed to answer if and how well SLS: • Carries out our mission • Is self-sufficient and sustainable • Is accountable to our constituencies • Makes decisions and allocates resources to support student learning • Demonstrates evidence of student learning • Provides for and monitors needed school improvements

The Accreditation Process • Is TRANSPARENT AND INCLUSIVE • Assures involvement and collaboration of all • Clarifies the SLS mission and student goals • Assesses all school programs and operations in terms of student learning • Develops a reasonable and doable plan that identifies major goals and activities for improvement, timeline for work, resources needed, and responsibilities

Calendar and Timeline • November 2011 to January 2012 • Review of documents from previous Self-Study • Assignment and training of committees • February through May 2012 • Data-gathering, analysis and synthesis • May – July 2012 • Draft document preparation • August – October 2012 • Determination of areas of improvement and creation of school-wide action plan and follow-up process

Calendar and Timeline • November 2012 • Final review and edit of Self-Study report • December 2012 • Publish and submit to HAIS and Visiting Team • January – March 2013 • Accreditation Visit • April 2013 • Follow-up committee begins work on school-wide action plan • April – June 2013 • School notified of term

Self-Study Report Format • Four Sections • Description of School • Progress Report on Previous Major Recommendations and Substantial Changes • Self-Study Report (12 to 13 chapters) • Strengths and Growth Needs/Improvement sections at the end of each chapter report • Statistical Supplement & Appendices

The Report & Action Plan • Student focused • Consistent and concise • Address indicators and form conclusions with regard to prescribed criterion and standards • Accurately reflect assets and strengths, weaknesses and needs, and areas for improvement • Reflect the general consensus • Action plan of major goals built on consensus • Pass the “smell-test” of feasibility

  8. Visiting Committee Report • Things you need to know: • Prewritten with adjustments made after visiting classrooms and talking with constituencies • Major recommendations and commendations may be identified prior to and confirmed during visit based on Self-Study report. New areas may also be identified • Draft of the final report is usually left with the principal or president
