  3. Home Educators get less confident when it is getting: • More interesting • Easier And • Young people take on more responsibility • Young people begin cutting their own path

  4. Young people need your • Guidance • Wisdom • Experience • Support More than ever

  5. Pulling Older Children out of School It is very important to de-school when you begin home educating older children. • The child • Yourself Re-establish your relationship Do a project on home education…

  6. One month off for every year Don’t be afraid to take 1 month off for every year your child has been in school. So if you are pulling out a14 year old to home educate take 9 or 10 months before you get into the academics. Remember it only takes 2 – 4 years to teach them the skills/tools they need. So relax and have a fun time together – read heaps together, do projects together, play board games together, do stuff outside together, show hospitality etc. • And don’t forget to do the project on home education together during this time.

  7. What are people’s main fears/concerns? • Qualifications– NCEA, Cambridge etc • Getting into University • Getting into PolyTech • Getting into an apprenticeship • Getting a job

  8. Why are Qualifications Wanted? • First we need to think why we need the qualifications and what qualifications? • So questions to ask are… • What does your child want to do? • What does he/she have to do to get there?

  9. Cambridge Exams The only way for home educators to do Cambridge is through this group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NZHomeEdCambridge/ Do not approach any schools about Cambridge

  11. So how do we get there? Thinking of what we have been talking about earlier today our children have: • Gained a wide knowledge • Learned the skills/tools • Now they are ready to put all this knowledge to use and they have the skills and tools to do this.

Basics Always Basic • Read: Comprehension and discernment • Listen: Comprehension and discernment • Write: Note taking – important stuff, Essays (5x5) • Speaking: words, dress, body language, aids • Arithmetic: Learn what they need • Time Management: Work steadily • Priorities • Discipline • Exam techniques
