  1. Paul: a journey of faith In Transition

  2. Headed Home • Preached for more than 20 years • Completed 3 Missionary Tours (traveling about 9,500 miles) • Written at least 5 of his 13 NT books • Established a “Ministry to the Gentiles” • Started or helped start dozens of churches • Evangelized hundreds • Coordinated disaster relief fund

  3. Acts 21:10-12 • 10 After we had been there a number of days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11 Coming over to us, he took Paul's belt, tied his own hands and feet with it and said, "The Holy Spirit says, 'In this way the Jews of Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and will hand him over to the Gentiles.'" 12 When we heard this, we and the people there pleaded with Paul not to go up to Jerusalem.

  4. Acts 21:13-15 • 13 Then Paul answered, "Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus." 14 When he would not be dissuaded, we gave up and said, "The Lord's will be done." 15 After this, we got ready and went up to Jerusalem.

  5. Parallel Paths • Luke 9:51 “As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.” • Acts 21:13 “I am ready…to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.“ • Not my will, but yours!

  6. Table Talk • Why did God foretell Paul’s upcoming humiliation and suffering in Jerusalem?

  7. Welcome Home! • Christian Suggestion (solidarity) • Purification • Expenses • Paul’s Choice: “Truly emancipated souls are not in bondage to their emancipation” – F. F. Bruce

  8. Acts 21:27-28 • 27 When the seven days were nearly over, some Jews from the province of Asia saw Paul at the temple. They stirred up the whole crowd and seized him, 28 shouting, "Men of Israel, help us! This is the man who teaches all men everywhere against our people and our law and this place. And besides, he has brought Greeks into the temple area and defiled this holy place."

  9. Welcome Home! • Jewish Response (imagination) • Guilt by assumption • Any excuse will work • Paul’s Defense (your explanation?) • Heritage and history • Call, conversion, and confirmation • Roman Response • Truth under torture • Political solution

  10. Table Talk • Why didn’t God spare Paul the pain and humiliation of the arrests and trials of his present and future?

  11. Acts 23:11 • The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, "Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome."

  12. Presence • Acts 23:11 “the Lord stood near Paul” • Matthew 28:20 “And surely I am with you always” • Isaiah 7:14: lae( WnM'î[I -- VEmmanouh,l
