Why Authors Use Methods of Organization • Presents information in a logical format. • Presents information that suits the subject matter and goals. • Helps readers make sense of what they are reading and helps them remember the content.

What Are OWCs? • OWCs are organizational word clues. • These word clues alert you to the twists and turns in the path of an author’s thinking. • They help you to determine the level of importance of an author’s ideas. • They indicate the overall organization of written text.
Examples of OWCs • Listing: first, second, first of all, finally • Analysis: features, types, properties, factors, findings • Cause/Effect: since, reasons, affect, thus, causes, if…then
Examples of OWCs • Comparison/Contrast: however, on the other hand, like, but, yet, different from, in other words, similar to • Definition/Example: defined as, another meaning, is, also referred to as • Sequence: first, steps, procedures, events, rules, process, order of events
