  2. Induction Week – intense and expensive! • Is it Effective? • Meeting the expectations of first years? We set out to find out…

  3. Focus Group - DIT Bolton St, July 2011 • Mix of post - Leaving students, • Dublin 60% & Cavan 40% • Gender balanced • All applied had for DIT (30% - first choice); • Open-ended questions • Facilitated by DITSU Marketing Manager

  4. General… Students were… hopeful, anxious Expect that they will be ‘Learning in new ways’ – no ‘spoon feeding’ – what does that mean?? ‘Expect that ‘Assessment will be different’ – hopefully less written exams?

  5. What’s ‘Induction or Orientation’? Icebreakers??? No way!

  6. Key information: Where is everything? What will it be like? Getting to know the College (physical spaces - don't want to get lost!) Want to meet and get to know the people in their class;

  7. How are classes run? How is it different from secondary school? What’s my timetable like? How do I get / find books etc.

  8. Who would they most like to meet? • Peers • Second / third years • Graduates of the programme • ‘Tutor’/ ‘head lecturer’ (go-to person)

  10. 3 key findings By the end of the Induction…. • Handbook (maps, contacts, timetable, reading lists, services, course details) • Name / contacts for key ‘lecturer’ • Class Timetable and map
