Geoffrey Chaucer ~ The Basics • Lived from 1343 – 1400 • Born into a middle-class family • His dad was a wine merchant who made enough to provide him with some education • He became a page to an eminent family and later an ambassador to the Crown • During his service in the army during the Hundred Years’ War he was captured by the French and the king contributed to his rans0m • He married Philippa and had at least two children
Geoffrey Chaucer ~The Writer • Father of English Poetry • Made the English Language Respectable • Before him people thought English could not convey all the nuances and complexities of serious literature. • Everything that was “serious” writing was done in either Latin or French • He wrote in Middle English • Used the vernacular • Writing was not his career; he was actually an advisor to the king.
Geoffrey Chaucer ~ The Legacy • The Canterbury Tales are his most famous work • Some of his other works include House of Fame, Parliament of Fowls, and Troilus & Criseyde • Chaucer was the first person buried in what is now known as the Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey • Neville Coghill said, “The Father of English poetry lies in his family vault,” of Chaucer’s burial place.
