S.D.C. Capstone Overview • The College of Engineering hosts a more than 30 student design projects: • http://engineering.osu.edu/studentorgs • Students involved in these activities can use the content as their capstone design project (under certain conditions…) • A student design team of 3-6 seniors is created • The project gets the approval of the course instructor • The project gets the approval of the design competition’s faculty advisor • The student design team finds an appropriate advisor for the project
Student Design Competitions • Motorsports Projects: • Formula SAE • BAJA SAE • Buckeye Bullet • EcoCAR 2 • Electric Motorcycle • Many Other Design Competitions
Key Entities in Student Design Capstone Design Advisor: OSU Faculty/Staff Design Advisor: OSU Faculty/Staff Design Advisor: OSU Faculty/Staff Student Project Team (Volunteers + Grad Students) Design Team: 3-6 students Design Team: 3-6 students Design Team: 3-6 students Client: Team Advisor + Team Leaders Design Instructor: OSU Faculty/Staff
S.D.C. Capstone Overview • The course sequence results in 7 + 14 weeks of working on your project with weekly meetings for updates/advice/deliverables • It is possible to form interdisciplinary teams via other majors taking the ENG capstone sequence • The students taking the ME sequence and the ENG sequence begin working together in the second 7 weeks • Funding for these projects comes out of already available team budgets (i.e. need faculty advisor approval)
Recent Projects • Buckeye Bullet: • Battery Pack Design, 400 Mph Tire Tester, Vehicle Lift • EcoCAR: • Battery Pack Design, Automated Manual Transmission Actuation System, Automated Manual Transmission Test Rig, Engine EGR and VVT Control, Vehicle Ride and Handling Improvement, Vehicle Charge Port Integration • Formula SAE: • Brake Tester
How to Create a Team / Project • If you are on a design competition already, find some other seniors and form a team: • If you don’t have enough to form a team, recruit a few people outside your team • I will also have a pool of interested students who need placed on capstone design team • Teams must (usually) be made up of at least 50% “veteran” student design competition members • Teams must have a faculty member as an advisor (usually the student design competition’s faculty advisor) • Projects should come from working with the design competition team leaders and advisors and then reviewed by the capstone instructor
How to Enroll in this Option (MEs) • Enrollment is “permission of instructor”: • For students already involved in a student design competition, I need an email from your team leader saying you are part of the team • Other interested students should send me an email with a current resume • We will have a meeting later in the semester to get people organized into final teams for next year • Entry into this version of capstone depends on availability of projects, advisors, and funding
How to Enroll in this Option (Non-MEs) • Enrollment is unofficially “permission of instructor”: • For students already involved in a student design competition, I need an email from your team leader saying you are part of their team • Other interested students should send me an email with a current resume • Once I have you on my list, I will work with Bob Rhoads to place you into the ENG Capstone sequence • Do not enroll in the ENG Capstone directly – if you do this Bob will assume you are doing one of his projects • Entry into this version of capstone depends on availability of projects, advisors, and funding
