  1. Bell Ringer Watch the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rABKB5aS2Zg

  2. *lacks a cell nucleus or any membrane-encased organelles *Genetic info is single loop (circle) and not in nucleus (free floating) *Unicellular (1 celled organism) *has nucleus and membrane-encased organells *genetic info organized into chromosomes (double helix) *can be single celled or multicellular Prokaryote vs Eukaryote Fungus Archaea Animial Bacteria Plant Strep Staph Contain some genes and metabolic pathways that are closer to that of eukaryote

  3. Prokaryote and Eukaryote Venn Diagram

  4. Animal Cell Head (polar…hydrophilic) Tail (nonpolar… hydrophobic) Inside or outside? steroid http://waynesword.palomar.edu/lmexer1a.htm

  5. Animal Cell Vocab • Summarize the structure and function of the following: • Nucleus • Plasma membrane • Mitochondria • Ribosome • Rough ER • Smooth ER • Golgi Apparatus • Lysosome • Centrioles

  6. Lysosome Animation • http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0072495855/student_view0/chapter2/animation__lysosomes.html

  7. Plant Cell

  8. OH MY!! This is a carb!!!!

  9. Plant Cell Vocab • Vacuole • Chloroplast • Cell Wall • Why are there less to define?

  10. At the End of this you should be able to say…. • I can compare and contrast as well as correctly label an animal and plant cell • I can correctly match the organelles (based on my memorization of their shape) with their function.

  11. Homework • Complete a Venn Diagram between an Animal Cell and a Plant Cell

  12. Tools for You Animal vs Plant Animation http://www.cellsalive.com/cells/cell_model.htm Quizlet (flashcards) http://quizlet.com/410483/cell-organelles-and-their-functions-flash-cards/

  13. Bell Ringer • List the organelles that make a plant cell different from an animal cell. 17. Leeuwenhoek Late 1600’s Found: Vacuole Bacteria Bands in muscle fibers Hooke Mid 1600’s Coined the word “cell” after looking at a sliver of cork tree in the microscope Wrote Micrographia- book about his findings under a microscope

  18. Microscopes Electron Light A bean of electrons light up the specimen and magnifies the image Also called a compound light microscope Uses light and more than one lens to illuminate and magnify Both magnify

  19. Usually contains a 10X lens 4X, 10X, 40X Total magnification= Ocular X Objective……………10 X (4 or 10 or 40) = 40, 100, 400

  20. I will be able to distinguish between a prokaryotic cell and eukaryotic cell by the presence of a nucleus • Staph and pneumonia onion (plant) 2. I will be able to distinguish between a plant and animal cell using a light microscope Plant Animal

  21. Microscope Lab • The “e”lab

  22. ACE (answer, concept, evidence)follow up the “e” lab • Which two organelles make a plant cell different from an animal cell?

  23. The two organelles that make a plant cell different from an animal cell are the cell wall and the chloroplast. The cell wall serves as structural support (or shape) for the plant, it serves as the “skin” of the plant protecting the plant from pathogens and animals. The chloroplast is needed for photosynthesis, without this process plants would not be able to make their own energy. During the “e” lab we inspected an animal and plant cell. We were told to label the parts of both an animal and plant cell. This allowed us to visually see the cell wall.

  24. Bell Ringer Should we use stem cells for medical purposes?

  25. Stem Cell Specialized Cell • Nerve-send/receive messages • Red Blood Cell- transport oxygen • White Blood Cell-immune system • Muscle • Skeletal • Cardiac • Smooth • Gametes • Egg • Sperm Differentiation or expressing different genes

  26. 1.What makes stem cells so amazing? 2. How can they be used? 3. Is it ethical? Stem Cells Stem Cells are… non-specialized cells (they can become anything!...nerves, muscles, liver) They divide and become various specialized cells (this is based on the DNA expression…only parts of the DNA is activated and that will determine function. Which part is avtivated is based on the cell’s environment Have ability to self-renew • Adult • Obtain from: • Bone marrow, • adipose (lipid) cells, • blood, • umbilical cord (bank your baby’s cord blood • Embryonic • donated fertilized eggs uses for in vitro • Removing embryo from mother 76 hours after fertilization

  27. Specialized Cells Hormones are chemical signals that are translated into electrical signals via the nerve. When the signal needs to travel from one nerve to the other it will convert back to a chemical signal ( in the synaptic cleft) and back into an electrical signal. For a signal to make a nerve “work” the signal must reach activation energy. Transport tissue in plants

  28. Now to re-visit…. • Should we use stem cells for medical purposes?
