  1. Getting a Drink Case 34

  2. Summary • To begin the title Getting aDrink is literal in this case study. There is a girl in the class named Dari who has a medical condition that is not named that requires Dari to take medication each morning. This medication makes Dari thirsty and she is allowed by the teacher to get a drink when it is needed. • The teacher Ms. Patterson has a rule that students can not get drinks during class time. • Why? • Her reasoning is that it becomes a distraction. • The other children in the classroom call Dari a teacher’s pet and resent her for the freedom of accessing a drink when she wants to.

  3. Dari’s feelings • Dari begins the case study narrating her trip to the water fountain. • She feels uncomfortable going to the water fountain and states “If I had the choice I’d rather not go at all.” • She is confused that the other students are not able to get drinks when they are thirsty. • She rationalizes that Ms. Patterson always has her coffee mug that she is drinking out of why can’t the students be able to get a drink when they are thirsty.

  4. Basic Needs to Encourage Learning • Self Actualization • Esteem • Love/Belonging • Safety • Physiological • The need not being met in Ms. Patterson is Physiological. The Physiological needs are food , WATER, breathing, sleep, homeostasis, and excretion. The children do not feel as if hey can get a drink when necessary and this is an issue.

  5. Teacher’s Explanation • A student named Craig asks “It’s a really hot day and I’m thirsty. Can I get a drink?” • The teacher says no explaining “you know my rule about that.” • Craig persist and brings up 2 points. • 1. Why can Dari get a drink when she wants to? • 2. What about water bottles? • Ms. Patterson answers Dari has a medical condition and I know she will only get a drink if she has to. She also says no to the water bringing up an example of last year how the kids squirt the water bottles back and forth. • Her amount of coffee drank is brought up as well and she states I need this I do most of the talking while teaching.

  6. Trust • Ms. Patterson has no trust in her students she could adjust her classroom to allowing water bottles wish a simple system of reward which would be keeping the water bottle and punishment which would consist of it taking away. • Dari would rather not go to the water fountain and if everyone has a water bottle she will not feel exposed about her medical condition. • Because the children see her drink her coffee all day they are resistant to her rule of no drink breaks in class.

  7. Why does Dari become teased in the class?

  8. Answer: • Dari is seen as privileged because only her and the teacher are able to drink whenever they need it. • No other child is given the opportunity to get a drink if they are thirsty. • The teacher is not willing to adjust her rule of the classroom to fit her students needs.

  9. Why did Ms. Patterson shut down the water bottle idea?

  10. Answer: • She explains her situations of behavior problems when she did allow water bottles. How students would squirt each other with the water bottles.

  11. Why do you believe that this is Ms. Patterson’s last year teaching in the classroom?

  12. What would you have done differently in your own classroom with the same situation?
