  1. HOW DOES A PLANT DRINK?

  2. Antoinette was a curious little girl. She asked her mother 'Mommy, how do plants drink?'. Her mother smiled and said 'they take water from the soil'. This confused her even more, and so she spent all day and spent all night wondering.

  3. The next day she went out to the garden and kneeled down next to a lovely, colourful flower. 'Ms Flower, how do you make drink?' To her surprise, the flower turned to face her and said 'let me show you'

  4. Suddenly Antoinette felt herself get smaller, until the flower towered above her. She saw a little tunnel in the soil by the flower, and she walked inside.

  5. At the end of the tunnel she found long things coming out of the flower. She also saw a number of small liquid things going inside. 'Who are you and where are you going?'

  6. ' We are water, and we are entering the plant. To do so we must enter through the roots, these long things you see here.' 'Oh! So that's what these are, roots. It is through these that plants get water!' 'Correct!' smiled Mr Water. He then turned and entered the roots. Antoinette, as curious as ever, followed him inside.

  7. In the root, she continued to walk further inside, until she came to a vertical tunnel, similar to an elevator. She once again turned to Mr Water, and asked, 'What is this place?' 'This is the stem, we go up the stem to the rest of the flower' 'Oh, I see! So water travels through the roots, and up the stem to the rest of the flower!'

  8. 'Correct' He then started moving upwards. Antoinette followed him once more, going up, up and up.

  9. When they reached their destination, she asked him 'Where are we now, Mr Water?' 'We are inside the leaves. This is the place where plants make their own food, but we'll leave that story for another day'.
