P.A.Quiz • Which teaching technique is particularly used in the Participatory Approach? • Problem Posing • Info-Gap • Graphic Organizers • What is the teacher’s role? • A conductor, guiding the students’ speaking and movements in class • Sets clear language and content objectives in the class • Identify problems in students’ lives and integrating these ideas into class • What is the students’ main role? • To listen and repeat the teacher’s English clearly and efficiently • Shares daily concerns in class, being a good listener and collaborator • To stay awake without drinking too much coffee.  • How is the Participatory Approach similar to the other communicative methods? (You can compare it to one other method, such as Content Based Instruction, Tasked-based Learning, etc.) • How is the Participatory Approach different from the other communicative methods? (You can compare it to one other method, such as Content Based Instruction, Tasked-based Learning, etc.)

Introduction cards • Born out of frustration • When meeting a new teacher/guest, students will… • Not say a word when asked, “Do you have any Q’s?” • Ask something inappropriate • Take forever to ask a good question • These cards fix this problem and reinforce basic English grammar/vocabulary!

  5. Task • Change your word/phrase into a question (but please don’t write on them!) • Write make your own card. I will have the Japanese students ask me these questions, and will tell you their answers. 

Introduction Cards and 16 Features • Materials should achieve impact • Materials should help learners to feel at ease • Materials should help learners develop confidence • What is being taught should be perceived as relevant and useful • Materials should facilitate learner self-investment and discovery • Learners must be ready to acquire the points being taught • Materials should expose the learners to language in authentic use • Learner’s attention should be drawn to the linguistic features of the input • Materials should provided opportunities to use the TL for communicative purposes • Materials should take into account that the positive effects of instruction are usually delayed • Materials should take into account that learners have different learning styles • Materials should take into account that learners differ in affective attitude • Materials should permit a silent period at the beginning of instruction • Materials should maximize learning potential • Materials should not rely too much on controlled practice • Materials should provide opportunities for outcome feedback

  9. Jeopardy • Quiz game in the USA • You can make your own PPT or WB game easily. • Good for reviewing reading/listening lesson plan content • Divide students into teams • Correct answers earn them points
