HYDROGRAPHIC COMMITTEE ONANTARCTICA (HCA) SURVEY PROGRAMME WORKING GROUP PROGRESS REPORT 2007 HCA7-8A
Objectives HCA Survey Programme Working Group, established in 2004 has the objectives: To establish cooperation and collaboration between hydrographic organizations and scientific institutions in hydrographic surveying in Antarctica
HCA Survey ProgrammeWorking Group Members: Australia Chile Germany Greece South Africa UK (Chair) COMNAP IAATO
What have we got?Maritime Shipping Routes (MSR) • Fully endorsed scheme of main and branch corridors • Input received from member states, IAATO, COMNAP, scientific institutions and Navies • Structured survey plan for MSRs identified through usage and existing survey coverage (S-55), subject to review to meet evolving requirements • Understanding of SOLAS responsibilities
What next? • Limited progress in past year – lack of resource • Now need to produce document highlighting HCA surveying plans and charting expectations ie produce HCA7-8B • Now need to prepare paper to stress need for accurate charting and modern survey coverage, to ensure reliable and confident navigation for existing and future vessel movements • Incorporate document and paper above in presentation to ATCM XXXI in 2008 • Maximize opportunity of 7th HCA meeting to update the following tables to inform presentation to ATCM
