Physical Education (PE) The school’s PE programme seek to develop in each pupil the ability to: • Perform and enjoy a variety of physical activities with understanding • Develop and maintain physical health and fitness through regular participation in physical activities • Demonstrate positive self-esteem through body awareness and control • Understand and apply thinking skills to PE • Demonstrate the spirit of fair play, teamwork and sportsmanship • Acquire safe practices during physical activities

  10. Physical Education (PE) Health Education Worldwide Concern • In 2010, our National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign (NHLC) 2010 focused on obesity. It is a world wide concern including Singapore who face an uphill challenge of fighting a rising prevalence of obesity. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also declared obesity to be a global epidemic and has been spearheading a series of consultations and awareness campaigns to raise awareness of the global rising trend of obesity.

Physical Education (PE) Health Education Worldwide Concern • Childhood obesity will cause a higher risk of developing heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes at an early age or later in adulthood. Children may also experience low self-esteem. Underweight children may fall more easily, have reduced muscle strength and develop osteoporosis (brittle bones) in adulthood.

Physical Education (PE) Health Education Parents, we need your help • Encourage your child/ward to: • Exercise 3 times a week • Eat healthily, avoid food high in sugar and salt • Monitor Body Mass Index (BMI) • BMI = Weight Height X Height • Overweight, Severely Overweight • Acceptable • Underweight, Severely Underweight • Information can be found in the Pupil’s Diary from Page 18 to 20

Physical Education (PE) Health Education School Programmes • Let’s Play – Every Tues and Thurs morning from 7.30 a.m. to 7.55 a.m. (fun and games, cardio activities) • Milk Programme– Milk packets given to underweight pupils during Let’s Play • Recess programme – Every recess (loaning out equipment for pupils to play) • Wellness Club – Every Tues (games, sports and cardio related activities)

Programme for Active Learning (PAL) The design and delivery of PAL activities aim to achieve the following learning outcomes which provide the purpose for learning through PAL: • Exhibit confidence in what they do and express themselves effectively • Exhibit curiosity and positive attitudes to learn • Enjoy group experiences and teamwork
