Goals of the Course • Students will read great American literature • Students will develop their writing skills • Students will extend their knowledge of grammar • Students will develop their speaking and listening skills • Students will develop vocabulary
American Literature A Sampling of Literature: • Plays: The Crucible, All of My Sons, and Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller (two of three) • The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald • Primary Documents: Columbus Journal, Declaration of Independence, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” • Poetry: “On the Burning of our House” by Anne Bradstreet • Essays: By Emerson, Thoreau, Staples, Quindlen
Essential Questions • 1. How do time and place affect our thinking and behavior? • 2. Is “liberty and justice” available to all? If not, why not? • 3. What is a good citizen? • 4. What is beauty?
Student Expectations Students are expected: • to put forth their best effort in this class • to read the texts and complete all work on time. • to participate in class discussions and presentations
Homework • Homework significantly impacts students’ grades. • Livingston School District Policy: • 15 percent of each marking period’s grades
Grading • Homework • Tests and quizzes • Writing; long term projects and timed essays (SAT, HSPA) • Presentations
What Can Parents Do? Try to: • make sure your child goes to bed at a reasonable time • has a hearty breakfast • encourage your child to ask for help when needed
