Navigation (Orienteering) (This is an alternative rubric design) 1) Student is able to take a bearing using a compass 5pts- Consistently meets expectation 3pts- Sometimes meets expectation 1-0- Rarely/has not met expectation 2) Student is able to follow and input waypoints (GPS) 5pts- Consistently meets expectation 3pts- Sometimes meets expectation 1-0- Rarely/has not met expectation 3) Student demonstrates an understanding of using a map and compass to navigate 5pts- Consistently meets expectation 3pts- Sometimes meets expectation 1-0- Rarely/has not met expectation 4) Student demonstrates proficiency in navigating 5pts- Consistently meets expectation 3pts- Sometimes meets expectation 1-0- Rarely/has not met expectation 5) Student/group successfully navigated course in less than 1 hour 5pts- Achieved under 30 mins 3pts- Achieved under 1 hour 0- Did not complete TOTAL
Igniting and Maintaining a Safe Fire 4 Pts- Group ignited a small contained fire using appropriate resources from woods with less than 3 matches and under 5 minutes. Appropriate safety considerations were evident. (1 Pt Bonus if only 1 match used) 3 Pts- Group successfully ignited a small contained fire. Group may have taken longer than 5 mins or used more than 3 matches. Safety precautions were evident. 2 Pts- Group successfully ignited a fire. Group may have taken longer than 20 minutes, used more than 5 matches, and/or may have required prompting for success. 1 Pts- After considerable help and reminders of safety precautions, the group successfully lit a contained fire 0 Pts- Group was unable to ignite a fire. SCORE
